There
are a few words like a, the, these, this, that, some, many, much, any, every,
few etc. put before nouns. By putting these words, we can determine whether the
noun is singular, plural, countable, uncountable. Like adjectives, these words
qualify the nouns. These words are known as determiners.
Classes of determiners :
On the basis of their uses, determiners can be divided into following
classes
(a) Articles- a, an, the
(b) Demonstrative words- this, that, these. those
(c) Ordinals- first, second, third, fourth etc.
(d) Cardinals- one, two, three,four etc.
(e) Quantitatives- little, few, much, many, some,
any, several,no
(D Possessives- my, mine, your, our, his, their,
Bhuyan's etc.
Articles
A, an, and the are the three articles. Though they
are put in front of nouns like an adjective; they are not
adjctives Articles are of the two types
(i) Indefinite articles.
(ii) Definite articles.
Let us examine these articles with the help of
some examples.
A man
An apple
The pen
A man, An apple represent anyone man or one apple,
The pen represent one particular pen.A and An are called Indefinite
Articles and The is called Definite Article.
Use of Indefinite Articles
(A and An)
(i) 1 the first letter of a word is a consonant, a
1s used. For example, a book, a shop, a pencil etc.
(ii) Though an is used in front of a vowel, i the
vowel is pronounced as you then a is used. For example, a university, a
uniform,a unit etc.
(iii) In some other cases also where the o 1s
pronounced as we 1s used in front of a vowel. For example a one rupee, aone
eycd man etc.
(iv) An is used in front of a vowel. For example an elephant,an umbrella, an ox etc.
An is also used infront of h if its pronouciations
is that of vowel. For example, an hours, an honest man, an honurabie persons
etc.
(vi) An is farther used in front of an abbreviation
if the pronounciations of the letter begins with a vowel sound. For example,an
M.P and M.L.A. an R.PE, an S.O.S message, an NCC cadet.
Let us now examine the use of A and An is some
other forms with examples.
A man- Here it means one man
(i) A boy should play games here it means any boy.
(ii) When one noun stands for its entire class or
Group
(iii)A dog is a faithful animal
(iv)A tiger is a ferocious animal.
(v) When proper noun is used as a common noun
He is a Shakespeare of India.
Kashmir is a Switzerland of India.
When 'dozen', "hundred, thousand etc. are
used before plural noun
Give me a dozen of egg.
Could you please lend me a thousand rupees?
(ix) When so is used before an Adjective-
A or An 1s used between the Adjective and the Noun.
He is so nice a man.
She is so partya girl.

1. When we want to tell about only one particular thing. Example
The earth, the man, the river.
2. When a singular noun stands for entire group or
class The cow is a domestic animal.
The tiger is a wild animal.
3. The is also used in front of the name of a
river, mountain, sew, important event, great epic etc.

1. Articles arc not used with proper Nouns Ram is

7. Some common nouns, where articles are not used

He was seriously ill and had to go to hospital He
has gone to school.

He has left by train.
He is coming by bus
S. Article is not used with college and university
names He is doing his M.A. in Dhubri University.

Some more Determiners
1. Much and Many
Much is used for uncountable Noun and it expresses
amount, whereas many is used for countable Noun and expresses numbers.For
example
(a) There are much shortage of drinking water in
Dhubri(b) Many foreign tourists visit Pabarchara every year.
There are many more other words used in place of
many and much .They are Plenty of large number of, a lot of, lots of, a great
deal of, huge amount or huge number etc.
(a) He has perty of novels.
(b) A large number of foreigners have settled in
Assam.
(c) I have plenty of work to do.
2. Some and Any :
These two determiners are used for both countable
and uncountable
Nouns and for expressing amount and numbers.
For example:
(a) He has some guests today.
(b) He does not have any work today.
(c) Would you like to have some offece?
(d)-Do you have any work now?
3. Few and little :
Few is used to express numbers and little is used
for amount.
They express negative ideas.
For example
(a) Arun has few novels. (no novels)
(b) There is little medicine left in the bottle.
(no medicine) "a few', the few', or 'a little, 'the little' etc. are used
to express positive ideas
For example
(a) He has a few books (means very less number of
books) (b) The few books he had got lost
(c) There is a little beer left in the bottle.
(d) The little money he had was also stolen by
somebody.
4. Each and Every
"Bach' is used for two or more. Every' is
used for more than two. Both Each' and Every' are used as singular countable
Nouns.
For example
(a) Each of the two boys got prizes.
(b) Every student in the class has scored more
than sixty per cent marks.
(c) Each of you can come (d) Every student was
present.
5. 'Either or and 'neither. nor
Let us examine their uses with help of some
example.
(a) Either you or I will go to market.
(b) Neither you nor I will go.
In the first example, one of them will go to
market. In the second example none of them will go. 'Or' is used for either and
'Nor is used for neither.
6. No, not, don't, do not etc.
These are used for expressing negative ideas.
For Example:
(a) I have no work today.
(b) I do not have to go today.
