Development of four skills:

Listening, speaking, reading, writing.

Lexically, the word 'skill' refers to an ability to do an activity or job well, especially because you have practiced it In other words, 

it'is the learmed proficiency to accomplish encoded results often with minimum outlay of time, energy, or both. In every demain of our life, skills give us the necessary respite for shining to the desired leve with ease and comfort, and being able to communicate effectively is the most important of all life skills.

The word communication' which derives its origin from Latin 'commmunis', meaning "to share', is thie activity of conveying information through the cxctange of thoughts, information, or messages, as by speech, visuals.

signals, writing, or behavior communication skills has a negative impact on the personal as well as professional life of a person. . By successfully getting our message across, we convey our thoughts and ideas successfully. 

The four communication skill viz listening, reading, speaking and writing are important enough to deserve the attention of leamers of communication skill.

A. Listening skill:

Generally, listening is considered as the active process of eliciting information which involves mind, senses.Attitgades and emotions. To be an effective communicator, one has to be an effetive listener in both the personal sphere and at the workplace. Unfortunately, many people equate listening with hearing. 

On the contrary hearing' is only one of the three basic steps of listening process- the other two being 'understanding' and judging"

A.1.Hearing:

Hearing is the first step of listening, and as ane of the traditional five senses it refers to the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations via an organ such as the ear.

 In simple, hearing implies listening enough to catch what the speaker is saying

A.2.Understanding:

 The next part of listening takes place when we take what we have beard and understand it in our own way. 

Understanding is a psychological process related to our hearing whereby we will be able to think about it and use concepts to deal adequately with that object.

B. Reading skil:

Reading is the receptive skill in the written mode. At the initial level reading is reorganization of words and at the next level it leads to comprehension of its meaning. 

The skills involved in reading are directed the goals of independence, 

comprehension, and fuency. Independence in reading is the ability to read or understand in his or her languago without another's help: Comprehension is the ability to grasp ideas and facty after interacting nientally with the text; 

Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and expressively. As part of the communication skill four reading styles are practiced all over tho world- Skimming. Scanning. Extensive reading.Intensive reading.

B.1.Skimming:

 Reading rapidly for the main points is the style known as skimming One who masters the skill of skimming can quickly gather the most important information, 

or 'gist. It is not essential to understand each and every word in skimming Rather, onte has to run his or her cyes over the text gathering important information.

 All business and travel brochures, newspapers, magnzines ctc, are generally read with the style of skimming.

B.2. Scanning :

 Resding rapidly through a text to find specific information required is the style known as scanning. 

One who masters the skill of scanning can find a particular piece of information just by running his or her cyes over the text For instance we resort to scanning while we look for information like train schedule job interview, cinema programme etc in the news paper or who's who in current affair magazine etc.

 While scanning one should not bother much about any difficult word or phrase for he can clarify himself the at a later stage.

B.3.Extensive reading:

 Extensive reading refers to resding Jonger texts as well as business books often for pleasure and for an overall understanding. 

The skill which one must have to acquire is the flair for reading with a mind to have a general understanding only and not an in-depth one.

 The reading of novel in a train or before going to bed magazine article that read only for pleasure or any strategic business books are examples of extensive reading.

B.4.Intensive reading:

 Intensive reading involves reading shorter texts for detailed information with an emphasis on precisc and specific understanding. Intensive reading requires an understanding of each word, fact detail etc.

Intensive reading is also offen regarded as close reading. Any text which needs detailed study or information carrying any claim, service condition or requirenent, disclaimer etc. 

are instances of intensive reading.

A.3. Judging:

 Judging refers to the building of opinion or estimation afer careful consideration of what has been understood. 
It is a process of listening that leads to making of senses after careful consideration.
