COMBINATION INTO SINGLE SENTENCES

A. By using Participles:

(i) He finished his work. Then he left for home.

Ans. Having finished his work he left for home.

(ii) She was tired. She rested for a while.

Ans. Being tired, she rested for a while.

(iii) I was ill. He heard of it and called in a doctor.

Ans. Hearing of my illness, he called in a doctor.

(iv) She saw me come. She ran away.

Ans. Seeing me come she ran away.

B. By using Infinitives:

(i) He is very old. He cannot run.

Ans. He is too old to run

(ii) He has a large family. He has to maintain it.

Ans. He has a large family to maintain.

(ii) I have many friends here. They will stand by me.

Ans. I have many friends here to stand by me.

(iv) I have a house. I wish to let it.

Ans. I have a house to let.

C. By using Nouns or Noun Phrases:

 (i) He is honest. It is known to all.

Ans. His honesty is known to all.

(ii) Alexander was the King of Macedon. He invaded India.

Ans. Alexander, the King of Macedon, invaded India.

(iii) He is poor. But he is honest.

Ans. Inspite of his poverty he is honest .

(iv) His son died. This gave him a shock.

Ans, The death of his son gave him a shock.

D. By using Adverbs or Adverb Phrases:

(i) I came back home. It was evening at that time.

 Ans. I came back home in the evening.

(ii) He is an honest man. There is no doubt about it.

Ans. Undoubtedly he is an honest man.

(iii) She failed in the examination. It was unfortunate.

Ans. Unfortunately she failed in the examination.

E. By using too':

(i) The man is very weak. He cannot walk fast .

Ans. The man is too weak to walk fast.

(ii) The tea is very hot. I cannot drink it.

Ans. The tea is too hot for me to drink.

(iii) The news is very good. It cannot be true.

Ans. The news is too good to be true.

(iv) The mountain is very high. One cannot climb it Ans. The mountain is too high to climb.

(v) He is very young. He cannot play football.

F. By using 'enough':

(i) He is very tall. He can touch the ceiling.

Ans. He is tall enough to touch the ceiling (ii) 1 am very strong. I can lif the box.

Ans. I am strong enough to lift the box.

(iii) He has much patience. He can bear the pain.

Ans. He has patience enough to bear the pain.

G. By using a 'relative word':

() This is the boy. His father caught the thief.

Ans. This is the boy whose father caught the thief.

(ii) This is the place. He lives here.

Ans. This is the place where he lives.

(iii) A girl is singing there. Do you know her?

Ans. Do you know the girl who is singing there?

(iv) He is absent. Tell me the reason.

Ans. Tell me the reason why he is absent.

(v) This is the watch. You bought it yesterday.

Ans. This is the watch that you bought yesterday.

(vi) Where does he live? Do you know it?

H. By using a Noun Clause:

(i) He is honest. We know it. Ans. We know that he is honest.

(ii) You have insulted him. This is his complaint.

Ans. His complaint is that you have insulted him.

I. By using an Adjective Clause: 

(i) This is the boy. He stole my pen.

Ans. This is the boy who stole my pen.

(ii) A boy said this. I know him. 

Ans. I know the boy who said this.

(ii) You gave me the book. I have lost it.

Ans. I have lost the book which you gave me.

J. By using an Adverbial Clause:

(i) I was ill. So I could not go to school.

Ans. I could not go to school because I was ill.

(ii) You must come in time. Otherwise you will not meet him.

 Ans. Unless you come in time, you will not meet him .

(ii) I am his neighbour. Still he did not help me

Ans. Though I am his neighbour, he did not help me.

(iv) He heard the news of his friend's illness. He at once went there.

Ans. He went there as soon as he heard the news of his friend's illness

K. Combine into one sentence according to the instruction given in the brackets:

(i) He is tall. He is also strong. (Use 'not only...but also')
 Ans. He is not only tall but also strong

(ii) He cannot read. He cannot write. (Use 'neither...nor')
 Ans. He can neither read nor write.

(iii) She is beautiful. She is intelligent.
(Use both..and')

Ans. She is both beautiful and intelligent.

(iv) He was very tired. He fell asleep.
(Use 'because')

Ans, He fell asleep because he was very tired.

(v) I do not want you. I do not want your brother also.
(Use 'neither...nor)

Ans. I want neither you nor your brother.

(vi) Her son is my friend. He is a doctor. (Use 'who')

Ans. Her son who is a doctor is my friend

(vii) Swimming is a good exercise. Walking is good exercise. (Use 'both) 

Ans. Both swimming and walking are good exercise.

(viii) You are not sincere. You are not honest.
(combine with 'neither..nor')

Ans. You are neither sincere nor honest.
